Sokoine University of Agriculture wins AI Equity Challenge

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), represented by an AI for Health team (Joseph Telemala, PhD , Dr Neema Nicodemus Lyimo , Kadeghe Fue, PhD, Dr Silvia Materu , Dr Ndemile Kilatu) has secured first place in the initial phase of the AI for Equity Challenge: ClimateActionGender, and Health. This competition supports organizations leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to advance UnitedNations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 5, and 13—Good Health and Well-Being, Gender Equality, and Climate Action.

Climatechange intensifies existing disparities, undermining progress in maternal and childHealth (SDG 3) and genderEquality (SDG 5), particularly affecting vulnerable groups in the GlobalSouth. The challenge empowers organizations to create AI-driven solutions addressing critical issues at the nexus of climate action, gender, and health equity, aiming to utilize AI’s transformative potential for a more sustainable and just world.

Organized collaboratively by the
IRCAI—International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence, under the auspices of UNESCO (IRCAI) under UNESCOZindi, and Amazon Web Services (Amazon Web Services (AWS) ), is a two-part challenge that utilizes advanced #cloud technology and data from the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI). Winners receive prizes, AI solutions, and support totaling $275,000. SUA’s top placement was followed by strong performances from the United Nations Children’s Fund, Data Science Nigeria, and the Instituto de Tecnologia e Sociedade in Rio de Janeiro.

SUA has now hosted a US$ 37,500 Zindi Challenge https://lnkd.in/da_gDTAF
